Going Green with Your Little One: 7 Fun Earth Day Activities

At Peake Academy, we are passionate about instilling a love and respect for the environment in our students through engaging, hands-on activities that teach children about the importance of taking care of our planet.

In honor of Earth Day, we encourage families to join in on the festivities and participate in activities that promote sustainable living. Whether you're at home or in the classroom, there are plenty of ways to get creative and have fun while also doing your part to protect the environment.

So, let's roll up our sleeves, gather our little ones, and dive into these seven exciting Earth Day activities that will leave a lasting impact on our planet.

1. Plant a Tree Together

Planting a tree is one of the most meaningful things a family can do for Earth Day. Not only does it provide shade and oxygen, but it also reduces CO2 in the atmosphere, cleaning the air we breathe.

Get your kids excited about this activity by researching native trees in your area together, then setting off to your local nursery or garden center. Once you’ve selected the perfect tree, have your children help you dig a hole and water it in. This is an excellent lesson in responsibility and stewardship.

2. Make Recycled Art Projects

Get creative with your kids by making art projects out of recycled materials. Gather old newspapers, cardboard boxes, bottle caps, milk jugs, and any other recyclable items that can be reused for craft time.

Then let your imaginations run wild. You could build birdhouses out of milk jugs to hang in the yard, make paper mache masks from newspaper scraps and flour paste, or turn plastic lids into colorful suncatchers for the window.

3. Go on a Nature Walk

Go on an adventure around your neighborhood or local park to observe and appreciate the natural beauty of Earth Day. Point out the different animals, plants, and ecosystems you come across as you go.

You could also pick up any trash that you find along the way, giving your children a tangible example of how we can all work together to keep our planet clean. Finish your nature walk with a picnic in the park for lunch or dinner.

4. Do Some Composting

Teach your kids about sustainability and food waste by starting a compost bin in your backyard or kitchen counter (if allowed). Show them how to properly dispose of organic materials like fruit peels and eggshells in the bin and explain why it’s important to reduce our food waste.

Plus, you can have a little fun with this activity by having them help you turn the compost pile each week.

5. Visit a Farm or Garden Nearby

Let your children learn about where their food comes from by taking them on a field trip to visit a nearby farm or garden. They’ll get to see firsthand how fruits, vegetables, and herbs are grown and harvested.

It’s also an amazing opportunity for them to learn more about sustainable farming practices like crop rotation, beekeeping, and natural pest control methods. After your visit, pick up some fresh produce together so they can experience the full circle of food production.

6. Cook a Green Meal

Experience the joys of cooking with your family by preparing a meal that’s entirely made up of sustainable, locally-sourced ingredients. You could try making veggie burgers from scratch, creating colorful salads with fresh herbs, or baking treats like zucchini muffins.

Not only will this be a fun and delicious activity for everyone, but it will also help teach your kids about eating green.

7. Host an Earth Day Party

It’s never too early to start educating our children about climate change and environmental issues. For Earth Day, why not host a party for your friends and family that focuses on conservation?

Gather everyone together for an afternoon of eco-friendly activities like making Earth Day cards with recycled paper, playing nature-themed trivia games, or creating reusable shopping bags out of fabric scraps. You can also serve refreshments made from sustainable ingredients and teach your guests about the importance of reducing their carbon footprint.

Celebrating Earth Day is a great way to bring awareness and appreciation to our planet. These seven fun activities are perfect for teaching kids how they can make a difference in their own communities—and have a lot of fun while doing it.
